Stepwise Regression

Ten Basic Steps...

Win O R S, Stepwise Regression …

Step One: Start Win O R S.   Additionally, open a Microsoft Word document. If this is the first Word document for this assignment, then start Word by use of the Windows Start menu. If you have previously created a Word document then you must open the document by using the following Win O R S menu tree:. Solution.. Open M-S Word document…

Step Two:  Select all variables in the spreadsheet by placing the code I along row two for each column.  Select the menu sequence:. Applications. Variable Types.  In the types section, click on the I radio button. In the Select section, click on All - Exclude A. Click on O-K.

Step Three: Select the menu sequence:. Applications. Statistical Methods. Regression. The Regression Methods dialog box appears next.  Set the input range.  Choose the left-facing red arrow to roll-up the dialog box. Highlight all data cells that may be considered for analysis.  For example, the range may contain all cells from B-four to A--E fifty--eight. The forecast range is not discussed here.  It is an advanced method. Accept the default entry for the: Insert On range.

Step Four: In the block titled Method Choices, click on the Stepwise Regression radio button.

Step Five: In the section-block titled Options, for the Intercept option, accept the default check box. Under the section titled -- Setup Files For, we recommend clicking the O-L-S checkbox to the On state.  When in the On state, this will cause the stepwise solution to be reflected in the variable types along row two of the spreadsheet.

Step Six: The entry and exit percent control when a variable is entered into or removed from a stepwise solution. Please see the chapter on stepwise regression for more details.  That is, accept the defaults.

Step Seven: Click on O-K to generate a solution.  The following tabs are produced.  ANOVA. Parameters. Residuals-graphs. Correlation. Rho equal zero. Covariance. Not in solution.  NOTE: The academic version surpresses output on the ANOVA tab for the sole purpose of restricting students from using stepwise as a final model-building method.

Step Eight: print the results to the attached Word document.  Choose the menu sequence:

Step Nine: If you have completed your analysis, then go to step ten. If you have additional exploratory regressions to execute, go back to step five…

Step Ten:  Save, edit, and close all documents and applications.

This completes the ten basic steps for stepwise regression analysis.
